Long time caravaners, converted to Motorhome 5years ago when the girls went to university, we bought an old Dethleffs A class as an experiment and have found it suits us just fine.
Instead of upgrading to a newer van with less space we have improved our van with a bigger 2.8 engine, the old 1.9 was rubbish.
Been to most places in UK and much of France.
I have certain ammount of Tyre knowledge having worked for Pirelli and Goodyear (current) in the truck market for nearly 25 years.
Hi Geoff and Jane and :welcome3: to Club Motorhome.

Sounds like you made the right choice of motorhome first time then . We too have thought of upgrading but will stick with our van and improve it as required as it works really well for us.

Your engine change sounds like a pretty big improvement, was it an easy fit?

Chassis is a Fiat Ducato mk1,
The engine was easy, bought a donor 2.8 idtd (not the common rail too
many wiring issues with ecu)off ebay for £650, the gearbox was harder,
eventually found a 2.5 non turbo but had to change the internals
and fit tall 16"wheels and tyres to get a sensible ratio.
Cruises at 70 up a motorway hill, returns 30mpg.
still a bit noisey need some bulk head insulation.

Hi
I have a dethleffs also its a 1994 1.9 ,flew to germany and drove it home, yes the engine is a bit sluggish on hills but the turbo does the job and i,m very pleased with it,added a large solar panel with 3 leisure batteries so dont need electrics hook up ,been down through france and spain a couple times and heading off again last week in august for 3 weeks. We also moved through the ranks from tents caravans, converted vans etc, always france and spain since the mid 80,s..
Nice site and some good info found in the forums.
all the best pete and janet
