Hi All

We have bought a motorhome, LH drive, which we pick up from Kent to head to Europe for 6 or more months.
Our dealer suggested HIC insurance Walkabout policy as you don't need a fixed address, suitable for Australians, etc.
He also suggested Downunder Insurance, which is OK as the vehicle will be in Adele's name and she is under 60. (Cut off is 65 apparently).

Has anyone had any experience, or would they like to comment, perhaps with pitfalls to look out for, such as towing distances may be limited.

There are a few other questions too re personal travel insurance and VISAs on the go, but will post under separate topic.

Cheers and thanks in anticipation

Trev and Adele
Yes, towing distance is one issue. Make sure that breakdown cover includes your weight/lenghth - particularly a problem if you are over 3500kg. It's worth getting 'legal protection' then if are unfortunate enough to have a crash or other incident which you are not at fault you have someone to fight your case (for a cost of about £20.00. Check you have adequate windscreen cover - especially important if you are buying an A-class.

It's worth noting that if you vehicle is stolen using your keys it's unlikely the insurance will pay out - unless there are particular circumstances in which no blame at all can be passed to you.

Hi, Just a thought. I tow a Fiat Panda and was shocked to find out that my 'fully' comp insurance only covered the trailer, up to £1000, not the car when being towed on the trailer. So I have insurance covering my trailer separate from my motor homes insurance, plus the car is covered by its own insurance. But the real quirk is that should you suffer an accident the trailer and motor home can be recovered but if the car is not damaged you will have to drive it back to where ever? The same goes for if one of you become ill, recovery will only take place for all of the motor package if the only named driver is down. If both are on the policies then the last standing will have to bring the units back to 'where ever'. I pay £89 for full cover home and away on the trailer for a year.
Have a safe trip and call back to this site, there will be some one who knows some one.

Hi Trev & Adele,
We live in Oz too and are about to start our own 6 month tour of Europe. We've ended up going with Downunder insurance as they were significantly cheaper than HIC. They also allowed more countries than HIC. However, I did need to provide a UK address which we were able to do using a family member still in the UK - although they did mention a friend would also be OK.
Hope you find the right cover for the needs and good luck with the trip. Look forward to hearing how you get on.

All the best, Ian & Anne
